A note from the writer
Why I wrote
The Doll Keeper.
The Doll Keeper began with four Amber Alerts I heard during my commute. The girls were similar in age and size, but of different ethnicities. I couldn’t stop thinking about those children or the families waiting for news.
My research led to conversations with FBI and human trafficking agents. Those conversations helped shape the story and the questions at its center: What does survival cost the children held captive? What happens to the families searching for them and the people responsible for bringing them home?
Inside the Dollhouse, the Keeper takes the girls’ names and forces them into identities chosen for them. Sarah must find a way to resist while holding on to the friend she remembers.
I wanted the horror to come through the girls’ experience, the confinement, the uncertainty, and the choices they make to survive. Every girl in the Dollhouse had a life before she became part of the collection. I want the audience to feel what is at stake in getting that life back.
